New Thailand Travel Rule: Digital Arrival Card Mandatory for All Visitors

Starting May 1, 2025, Thailand has introduced a new mandatory requirement for all non-Thai nationals entering the country: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). This online form must be completed within 72 hours (3 days) prior to arrival by air, land, or sea, replacing the traditional paper-based TM6 immigration form. The initiative, rolled out by the Thai Immigration Bureau, aims to streamline immigration processes, enhance national security, and support public health monitoring.

What is the TDAC?

The TDAC is a digital form requiring travelers to provide:

  • Personal information (name, passport details, nationality)
  • Travel details (flight, train, or border crossing information)
  • Accommodation details in Thailand
  • A brief health declaration

Once submitted via the official TDAC portal (https://tdac.immigration.go.th), travelers receive a confirmation email with a QR code or reference number. This must be presented—either digitally or printed—at immigration checkpoints upon arrival.

Who Needs to Complete the TDAC?

The TDAC applies to all non-Thai nationals, regardless of visa status, entering Thailand. The only exceptions are:

  • Transit passengers who do not pass through immigration
  • Travelers using a Border Pass at specific land crossings

Failure to complete the TDAC in advance may result in delays at immigration, though officers can assist with on-site registration if needed.

Why the Change?

The TDAC aligns with Thailand’s push toward digital transformation in tourism and immigration. By replacing the paper TM6 form, the system reduces processing times, minimizes errors, and enhances data security. It also allows authorities to better track arrivals for public health and security purposes, a priority since the COVID-19 pandemic.

How to Apply

Travelers can access the TDAC portal starting 72 hours before their arrival. The process is straightforward:

  • Visit https://tdac.immigration.go.th.
  • Fill out the required fields with accurate information.
  • Submit the form and receive a confirmation email.
  • Present the confirmation at immigration checkpoints.

The portal is user-friendly, available in multiple languages, and accessible on mobile devices or computers.

What Else to Know?

While the TDAC is the primary new requirement, travelers should also be aware of a proposed Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt nationalities, potentially launching in June 2025. Details remain limited, and the ETA is not yet in effect. For now, visa policies remain unchanged, with many nationalities eligible for visa exemptions or visas on arrival.

Tips for Travelers

  • Plan Ahead: Complete the TDAC within the 72-hour window to avoid last-minute issues.
  • Check Official Sources: Visit the Royal Thai Embassy or Thai Immigration Bureau websites for updates, as travel rules can evolve.
  • Save Your Confirmation: Keep a digital or printed copy of your TDAC confirmation handy for immigration.

Thailand remains a top global destination, welcoming millions annually to its vibrant culture, beaches, and cuisine. The TDAC is a small but significant step to ensure a smoother and safer travel experience for all.
